LAKE KORISSION
Korission Lake is separated from the Ionian sea by impressive sand dunes. It covers an area of around 5.000 acres which makes it the largest lake of the island. Its main characteristic is the dunes, their height surpassing 15 meters, a cedar forest, unique to the island, and the wide range of rare flora and fauna species.
Birdwatchers will be thrilled with the sheer number and variety of birds they’ll find at Korission Lake, a gathering place for 126 species of birds, among others ducks, swans, flamingos, Great White Egrets, Eurasian widgeons, cormorants, as well as falcons. At certain times, over 2000 birds seek refuge in the Lake as it is an important stop for migrating birds on their journey from Africa to Europe. Reptile enthusiasts won’t be disappointed either, as the lake is a perfect habitat for terrapins and turtles. We must not forget the huge amount of butterflies as well.
Close to the lagoon, around a mile from the coast, there are two rocky islets, called Lagoudia. They are considered of special importance for the migrating birds, as they are the ideal place for the sea birds to reproduce. .
