GRAVA GARDIKI CAVE

Grava Gardiki cave has two entrances and is situated close to the Gardiki Fortress, about 400 meters from the main road.

The cave itself sits on the southern side of a small hill, 50 m above sea level, overlooking the entire area bellow.

Research conducted here started in 1965 and revealed evidence of habitation that settled in the area around 20.000 BC, in the final stages of the Upper Paleolithic era. It is considered the oldest human settlement on the island. At that time Corfu Island was still geologically connected to mainland Greece, as the sea level was 130 – 150 m below the present level. The today’s cave is 20 m long and its height reaches 13 meters. Excavations brought to light flint tools, animal bones (goats, deer) and other artifacts.
